Justin Tay (Fourth from Left)
I began my career as a menswear photographer, where I developed an understanding of working with people in front of the camera, from directing models and finding natural poses to capturing the details and character of a garment. That early experience taught me to pay close attention to how people carry themselves, and to look beyond the obvious image.
Over time, my work has moved increasingly towards documentary and travel photography. My clientele includes Malaysia’s premier travel agency - Apple Vacations Malaysia - where I’ve been on assignment to some of the world's most remote and remarkable places. From the barren deserts of Namibia to the towering mountains of Pakistan, I excel at working in unfamiliar and demanding environments, where I’m able to remain calm under sustained pressure and capture moments that would otherwise be lost.
The most valuable skillset I’ve developed is learning how to read a room and put people at ease in all situations. Whether photographing a fashion campaign, a group of high priority travellers, or strangers in unfamiliar circumstances, my easy-going nature and sharp instincts allow me to capture genuine moments that offer a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface.
I am a freelance photographer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Screen Practice & Production from Macquarie University, Australia.
I have over 10 years expertise working with both analogue film and digital processes.
My work has been exhibited by Leica Camera, Kuala Lumpur Portrait Awards, and Exposure+ Photo Festival. My photography has been published by Nikon, The Independent Photo, and LensCulture.
I am available for editorial assignments related to travel, tourism, menswear; or documentary assignments for NGO and journalistic publications.
